CARDIOLOGISTS AT B.R. SINGH HOSPITAL SUCCESSFULLY PERFORMED A RARE INTERVENTION IN A LACTATING MOTHER

Eastern Railway’s Hospitals are striving hard to provide super specialty standard facilities to its employees and beneficiaries. In that endeavour, Cardiologists of B.R. Singh Railway Hospital recently accomplished a remarkable medical procedure by conducting a Balloon Pulmonary Valvotomy (BPV) on a 35 years old mother who is currently breast-feeding her 7 months old child. In addition to BPV, a high-risk Cesarean Section (C.S) operation was also done at B.R. Singh Hospital. The patient was diagnosed with Congenital Pulmonary Stenosis, where one of the right sided heart valves became extremely tight, leading to a reduced flow of deoxygenated blood to the lunges.

Utilizing a percutaneous approach, the team of Cardiologists skillfully opened the stenotic valve using balloons, successfully reduced the obstruction. The procedure resulted in a significant reduction in the gradient, which decreased from 76 mm Hg to 10 mm Hg after the intervention.

Congenital stenosis of the pulmonary valve is a rare disease with a prevalence rate of 5 cases per 10,000 people. This procedure, performed through a small puncture in the groin, eliminates the need of open-heart surgery and offers a less invasive alternative for patients.

The successful completion of this rare intervention highlights the expertise and dedication of the medical professionals, particularly in Cardiology department at B.R. Singh Hospital.
